President's Message

A hearty welcome to Tobacco Valley Teachers Federal Credit Union as the latest credit union to affiliate with the League! We are honored by the trust you have placed in us to deliver world-class advocacy and other resources to help you succeed in a challenging marketplace. We are truly stronger together.

Speaking of teachers, staff at the League and CUBFI, our charitable foundation, are hard at work preparing for our golf tournament on August 11 at Wampanoag. Each year, the tournament raises a substantial amount of funds to increase our ability to provide financial literacy and personal finance education to young adults, primarily through our Reality Fairs, which we started and continue to offer virtually during the time of COVID-19. Please see my recent op-ed calling for financial literacy education as a graduation requirement here.

Please join us and swing a club (or hoist a glass) in support. This year we have an even more impressive selection of items for our auction (Caymus anyone?). The number of supporters and donors has grown this year and we are so grateful for our new friends that have helped us set a new fundraising record despite this pandemic. Thank you to Channel 3 WFSB for joining as our media sponsor and thank you to the CT Association of Realtors for sponsoring our $10,000 Hole in One challenge.

Golf carts are available but somewhat limited. Two riders are permitted per cart, but you are asked to wear masks while riding together.  I’ll be cruising the course with refreshments and other fun things.

As always, thank you for the opportunity to serve you another week,

Bruce

P.S. A note about Public Banks. More than one member CEO has noted a recent effort by some advocates to bring a public bank to Connecticut.  From the League’s perspective, this effort is likely to fail (again). The concept gets raised every couple of years as a legislative possibility, but never seems to gather enough support to show promise of passage. In short, advocates of a public bank generally forget that credit unions are ideally suited to do much of what a public bank would promise. We are keeping watch and are ready to respond should the idea gain momentum. Thank you to the members that reached out to us and expressed concern. #peoplehelpingpeople
