President's Message
Gotta Have Heart
As you may have already known, Heart Month comes (appropriately so) each February. Chances are you already know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women. That aligns with a study by the American Heart Association. But that same study found that only 13% of the women interviewed said it was their greatest personal health risk. Clearly, our fears and perception of risk are not driven by facts alone. It appears that most women worry more about getting breast cancer — even though heart disease kills six times as many women every year.
There are many reasons why breast cancer may be more top-of-mind for women, but many women report that their doctors do not even discuss coronary risk or even mistake the symptoms for panic attacks or stress. Let’s recognize Heart Month this February by talking about this with our doctors and friends. Yes, even if you are a man, you too can talk about women and heart disease – we do not just need our heart to live, but it also takes heart to save a life.
The League’s heart grew a little bigger recently with the reaffiliation of Scient Federal Credit Union! In choosing to join the League, Scient and CEO Chris Maynard specifically referenced the impact and reach of our charitable foundation, Credit Unions Building Financial Independence (CUBFI) which helps Connecticut’s Credit Unions do what we do best: support Financial Well-being for All. Scient shares a deep commitment to the credit union difference, and we are so glad to welcome the Scient family back to the League.
With my grateful heart for your affiliation, thank you to all League members for saving lives at Connecticut’s Credit Unions each and every day.
As always,
Bruce
