President's Message

On what was supposed to be a typical sunny summer day, the League’s charitable foundation, Credit Unions Building Financial Independence held its annual golf tournament. Mother nature had other plans and decided to provide a refreshing steady rain that cooled off our dedicated golfers. As I drove around the course to deliver much needed refreshments, the unofficial motto of the United States Postal Service ran on a loop in my head:

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.

To say that our golfers swiftly completed their appointed rounds is a bit of an understatement. Before too long, we gathered for dinner, enjoyed handing out the prizes and held a rousing live auction to raise funds in service to the CUBFI’s mission and to reaching even more people through our Financial Reality Fairs.

Thanks to your generosity, the golf tournament reached a new record in fundraising for the second year in a row. This year’s total dollars raised came in at $61,700 which eclipsed 2020 by over $10,000! Thank you again for your vote of confidence in CUBFI’s good work.

Back to the Postal Service. Another, less well-known inscription can be found on the building that formerly served as the Washington, D.C., Post Office but now houses the Smithsonian Institution's National Postal Museum. This inscription bears a more apt relationship to credit unions and the good work you do each and every day for your members and your communities:

Messenger of Sympathy and Love
Servant of Parted Friends
Consoler of the Lonely
Bond of the Scattered Family
Enlarger of the Common Life

Carrier of News and Knowledge
Instrument of Trade and Industry
Promoter of Mutual Acquaintance Of Peace and of Goodwill Among Men and Nations.

This inscription was adapted from "The Letter," written by Dr. Charles W. Eliot, former president of Harvard University and edited by President Woodrow Wilson.

As always,
Bruce
