President Message

Golf for Good

The General Assembly wraps up its legislative session tomorrow at midnight. The picture of me above reflects how most people in the dwindling hours of a grueling session. This year has proven to be just as difficult as 2020 and 2021, with limited access to legislators, testifying virtually, and persuading via email. Through all the challenges, your League has stood tall for credit unions and stayed on top of the fast-moving developments. Credit unions work for the good of their members and the communities they serve – and the League works to help you continue to do that. The charitable foundation for Connecticut’s credit unions, Credit Unions Building Financial Independence, is critical to helping credit unions achieve their purpose because it helps to tell your life-saving stories. This week, please enjoy a guest message from Dave Hinchey that highlights one of the foundation's largest fundraisers to help achieve its mission.

As always,
Bruce

With all due respect to the Masters and broadcaster Jim Nantz, to me, the Foundation golf tournament is a tradition unlike any other.

While we don’t award the winners a green jacket, what makes our tournament special is the “family reunion-vibes” and the connection that we all share as an industry. There’s something magical about our tournament which is a great opportunity for all of us to get together again and support CUBFI—the League’s foundation.

After a long winter and enduring two-plus years of the current public health crisis, the Foundation golf tournament is a welcome day out of the office. This year, we’re back in West Hartford on Tuesday, June 21st at Wampanoag Country Club for the tournament, which is sponsored by CUNA Mutual Group.

Come tee it up on the course on to support of the foundation’s mission of helping residents and communities build and maintain financial independence through assistance initiatives, financial education and credit union professional development programs.

The golf tournament is one of the foundation’s key fundraisers, which fuels our work. Here’s some of the great work we’re doing in the community, thanks to donors like you:

  • Raised more than $100,000 in aid for Ukraine which generated thousands of dollars in earned media for credit unions.

  • Delivered financial education virtually to thousands of students during the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • Certified more than 40 financial counselors with CUNA’s FiCEP program last year and enlisted 50 more participants for 2022.

  • Created a small credit union and CDFI Fund

  • Invested in credit union professional development through the National Credit Union Foundation’s development education program.

None of those programs and initiatives would be possible without your generosity and financial support.

Now, I recognize that not everyone plays golf, but maybe people on your board of directors do. Or, you might have some long-time, dedicated members that would take up the sticks on your behalf, or raffle a foursome away if your members drop a business card into the bucket.

There are many ways you can support the foundation and you’ll feel good knowing that your dollars go towards programs and initiatives that help credit unions and your community.

CUBFI is grateful for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on June 21st. For more information, see our golf registration packet here.
