Where History Inspires the Future – A RECAP of the 2025 National Conference of State Legislatures
Boston, the city where America’s fight for freedom began, was the perfect place for this year’s conference - full of inspiration, collaboration, and big ideas. Being surrounded by the history of the Revolutionary War reminded me that real change starts with honest conversations and a shared commitment to something bigger than ourselves. That spirit was alive all week as I talked with legislators from across the country and even around the world, exploring bipartisan solutions and fresh ideas.
One thing stood out: no matter the party, every legislator I spoke with lit up when I said I was with the Credit Union League of Connecticut. Their respect and appreciation for credit unions, and the important role we play in supporting communities, creating opportunities, and putting people before profits, were both encouraging and a great reminder of why this work matters so much.
The sessions were inspiring and practical, blending personal growth with valuable insights relevant to our industry. A highlight for many of us was Leslie Odom Jr.’s moving performance of A Change Is Gonna Come. His message about hope, unity, and progress hit home and echoed the values that guide the credit union movement.
The week overflowed with unforgettable moments — from sunset dining beside the storied Old Ironsides, to stepping onto the floor of the iconic TD Garden, to being swept away by the Boston Pops alongside Boyz II Men. The night became truly extraordinary when former Secretary of State and Senator John Kerry made a surprise appearance, delivering President Lincoln’s powerful words as the Pops played behind him. And as if that weren’t enough, the evening closed with fireworks bursting over the bay — the perfect ending to an inspiring week and a bright vision for the future.
This conference was a powerful reminder of why the credit union movement matters so deeply. In the birthplace of American independence, surrounded by the courage of the past and the promise of tomorrow, I connected with leaders from across the world. I left Boston inspired by history, energized by the bipartisan support I saw, and ready to keep building a strong future together - for our members, our movement, and the communities they serve.
